Schools services

We work with a number of schools throughout the region, providing engaging talks and presentations, to help raise awareness of our work in line with schools’ Citizenship agenda. We also provide a school’s liaison service and a free school-based counseling service.

Good Citizenship

Our Schools’ Programme links in with the good citizenship syllabus.

• A good citizen is someone who has 'empathy' for other people.
• A good citizen cares and shares.
• A good citizen respects people.
• Good citizens respect, tolerate, understand and care for each other.

Our programme raises awareness in schools about adoption and adoption related issues. It seeks to overcome prejudice and misunderstanding amongst children from birth families, and improve their social skills in dealing with adopted children.

The programme also provides support for adopted children in an environment in which they often find it hard to cope by:

  • raising awareness among school staff and parents
  • encouraging families to come forward as prospective adoptive parents
  • encouraging additional adults to volunteer to help in the work for the Society.

Schools counseling

We contract with schools directly to provide professional school-based counseling services for children and young people with social and emotional difficulties. We hope to provide support for children who are having difficulties at home and need support – children in care, adopted children and service families where parents are overseas.

We aim to help any child that may be affected by issues of loss, separation and trauma – not just looked after children, adopted children or service family children.

Every Child Matters

Our schools-based services and our schools liaison service aim to help schools meet their Every Child Matters outcomes. These are the five outcomes against which they (and social service delivery) are measured by Ofsted:

  • to stay safe
  • be healthy
  • enjoy and achieve
  • achieve economic wellbeing
  • make a positive contribution.

These outcomes also reflect the values of our organisation.

Resources

We have a number of resources available for primary and secondary schools. Please see the resources section
