Anancy Black Families
Anancy is the name of our initiative which aims to recruit more black and mixed heritage families for children needing adoption. We believe that wherever possible, children should be placed with families which reflect their own ethnicity and culture, and yet there is a lack of prospective adopters of black/dual heritage.
The National Adoption Register recently published its annual report, which shows that in 2007 of the 1714 children referred as needing an adoptive family, 501 of them were of black/dual heritage. However, of the 1094 prospective adopters referred to the Register, only 239 were black/dual heritage. This shows why Anancy Black Families is so important.
Many of the children from BME backgrounds are young and we don’t want them to have to wait to find a family. So if you are a BME family, please do contact us for more information.
Anancy support
We not only recruit prospective adoptive families, but support them too. We provide opportunities for adopters of BME and mixed heritage children to meet and socialise. Through friendship and fun, parents and children can learn about and celebrate their different heritages, and access support if they need to.
Where does the name come from?
The name Anancy comes from Anancy the spider, a character featuring in children’s stories in the Caribbean. Anancy is a friendly spider who makes things happen for children, and the spider’s web symbolises the way Anancy networks, linking communities with the Society and linking children with families.
We want to hear from you
Anancy are looking for all sorts of families to adopt BME children. Whether you are single or married, a parent or not, if you can offer a child love, security, and a positive sense of self, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
