Adoption Support Fund available now

May 01, 2015

We’re officially into the month of May, so we’d like to take this opportunity to remind our adoptive families to take advantage of a new government fund for Adoption Support which is being rolled out across the country as of today.

The new £19.3 million Adoption Support Fund will help pay for essential therapeutic services for adoptive families, as and when they need it. The scheme was piloted across ten local authorities over an eight month period, and during that time, over 160 adoptive families have benefitted from support totalling over £1 million.

Funding is accessed through Local Authorities, and will be available to adoptive families from any point after an adoption court order is issued, up until an adopted child is 18 years of age.  You can find out more about the process of applying to the Adoption Support Fund on the First4Adoption website.

SFCS places great emphasis on Adoption Support, and we are thrilled that the government is now recognising its importance in ensuring the stability of adoption placements and the futures of many vulnerable children.  The scheme will be rolled out across the country from today, and we would urge our adoptive families to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity if they need to.

In a press release issued by the Department for Education, Children and Families Minister Edward Timpson said:

“It’s encouraging that after just eight months more than 160 adoptive families have been given the help and support they need to bond with their families and settle into their new lives.

“I know from my own personal experience that some children adopted from care will have been through terrible ordeals which do not just simply disappear once they have settled with their new families.

“Adopters across the country who could benefit from therapeutic services should now be asking their local authority to apply to the fund so that they too can benefit from this essential support.”
