SFCS is proud to be an official supporter of Safer Internet Day 2018, joining the campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology.
Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day will take place on Tuesday 6th February 2018. Celebrated in over 100 countries, the event sees thousands of organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.
The day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in creating a better and safer online community. By celebrating the positive power of the internet, the 2018 theme of “Create, Connect and Share Respect” encourages everyone to make the most of the positive opportunities offered online, while giving them the resilience, skills, knowledge and support they need to navigate any online risks they may come across.
Will Gardner, Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre, says: “Safer Internet Day is a moment in the year where everyone across the UK can unite to celebrate the internet and make it a better place. Whether you are a young person, parent, carer, school or organisation, we can all take positive actions to make the internet a better place. We have seen record numbers of organisations pledging their support for the day making it the UK’s biggest campaign to inspire children and young people to use technology safely and positively. It is this collaboration that helps to ensure Safer Internet Day has such a positive impact, reaching 42% of UK children in 2017 and growing year on year.”
The internet is an amazing tool, but it can present very particular risks to adopted children and their families. The good news is that there is lots of useful advice available to adoptive parents.
In the week of Safer Internet Day, commencing Monday 5th February, we will be sharing a wide range of useful links for adopters on our Facebook page. And throughout Safer Internet Day itself, we’ll be busy sharing loads of helpful advice on our Twitter feed. If you use social media, please get involved by sharing the links we post and using the hashtag #SID2018.
We have also updated our Adoption Resources page to include links to information and advice for keeping adopted children safe online.
Whether we are children and young people, parents and carers, educators or social care workers, we can all be the change and unite for a better internet. We hope that you will join with us and Safer Internet Day supporters across the globe on Tuesday 6th February 2018 to unite for a better internet!
