October 12, 2015
Here at SFCS, we’re busy making preparations for National Adoption Week 2015, which begins next week.
National Adoption Week is an annual nationwide campaign which seeks to raise the profile of the thousands of children who are currently in care, awaiting adoption. This year’s campaign runs between Monday 19th – Sunday 25th October, and is entitled ‘Too old at 4?’. The campaign will focus on the ‘older’ children who are awaiting adoption and SFCS will play an active role.
Alison Miller, CEO at SFCS, says: “Potential adopters often feel they would prefer to parent a baby rather than an older child. What’s surprising is that these so-called ‘older’ children can be as young as 4.
At SFCS, we are particularly committed to placing ‘hard to place’ children. This includes older children, but also sibling groups of two or more children, those with physical disabilities or other additional needs, and children from black / minority ethnic backgrounds. This National Adoption Week, we want to emphasize the joys and rewards of adopting a ‘hard to place’ child.”
The highlight of our week-long campaign will be daily ‘real life stories’ on our website. A number of SFCS adopters have revealed their day-to-day experiences of becoming adoptive parents, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their support.
Many of these parents adopted so-called ‘hard to place’ children and they will be sharing the ups and downs of the adoption process, and celebrating how rewarding adoption can be. Visit https://www.sfcs.org.uk/posts/latest-news/ each day to read the latest real stories.
On the evening of Wednesday 21st October, SFCS will be hosting two special adoption information events in Milton Keynes and Peterborough. These events will enable potential adopters to find out more about the adoption process in a relaxed, no-pressure atmosphere. It’s also an opportunity to hear from existing SFCS adopters, who will honestly answer any questions about what it’s really like to become an adoptive parent.
SFCS will also be undertaking a social media campaign throughout National Adoption Week, on our Facebook and Twitter pages. And you can help! We’re inviting everyone to get involved by liking, sharing and re-tweeting our posts. This will help us to spread our message to a larger audience and really raise the profile of adoption across the region.
We hope you will get involved with our campaign this National Adoption Week, and if you have any suggestions or contributions that you wish to pass on to us, just get in touch – we’d love to hear from you!
