Spotlight on… One-to-one adoption support

May 14, 2018

Welcome to our web series, ‘Spotlight on…’. Each month, we go into more detail about one of our valuable services, to give you a real flavour of the work we do at SFCS and the support we can offer to anyone touched by adoption.

This month, we’re looking at the range of one-to-one adoption support we provide to our adopters and their children, both during and after placement.

Adoption is a rewarding and fulfilling experience.  However, many adopted children come from complex backgrounds and have had traumatic experiences.  Some of these children need specialised therapeutic support in order to settle and thrive throughout their developing life, and some adoptive families have difficulty adjusting to their new lifestyles.  There is nothing wrong with this, and SFCS is here to help.

If our adopters are experiencing problems, all they have to do is pick up the phone.  Our Adoption Support social worker will offer an empathetic ear and talk through your situation with you.  If help can be offered there and then, it will be.  If further support would be beneficial, a surgery appointment will be offered to you.

Our regular surgeries give adopters the chance to meet face-to-face with an adoption support social worker and a trained therapist. We will discuss any difficulties your family is having, offer advice and support, and help you make a plan for the future.

If needed, SFCS can also offer a range of counselling and therapeutic support for both you and/or your child, with experienced professionals and specialists.  Many of our staff are qualified in Theraplay® techniques, and other one-to-one support may be offered to our families if they need it.

Our purpose-built Family Centre provides the ideal location for all of this work to take place.  It’s light and inviting, and provides a safe and secure space where direct work with children, adults and families can be undertaken.

The Centre provides families with varied opportunities to connect with each other with the support of our specialist social workers.  A soft and comfortable room for a quiet therapy session, a wipe-clean space to ‘get messy’ in, or an enclosed garden to run around in and let off steam – whatever your family needs, our Centre can provide it.

Our one-to-one adoption support services can be accessed by all of our adoptive families, no matter how recently their adoption took place.  You won’t be judged, and can be guaranteed a helpful and supportive response from our Adoption Support team.  Just get in touch.
